EUSynBioS at the Automated Scientist Conference

From March 11th to 15th, our steering committee members Paola Handal Marquez (chair) and Joana L. Rodrigues (secretary) had the privilege of attending the conference “The Automated Scientist – the future of cell factory engineering” organized by Novo Nordisk Foundation Science Cluster and held at Favrholm Novo Nordisk Campus, in Hillerød, Denmark. During the conference, they represented EUSynBioS, sharing the society goals and mission. A poster entitled  “Cell factory Engineering in Europe - A Comprehensive Review and Future Perspectives” authored by Jose Eduardo Escrig Molina, Paola and Santiago Chaillou was also presented. Additionally, Paola and Joana presented their SynBio work on directed evolution of proteins and heterologous production of polyphenols, respectively.  Joana also had the opportunity to be part of the poster prize committee, evaluating the outstanding work presented by the PhD students – an experience both challenging and rewarding.

Automated Scientist Conference

Expectations were high, but the conference surpassed them all, offering a wealth of enriching experiences. From the captivating lectures and live drawing to the delicious food deserving of Michelin stars, every aspect of the event was truly remarkable! The venue itself, coupled with social outings to the Royal Danish Theatre and other networking activities, contributed to an unforgettable camaraderie atmosphere and intellectual exchange. The conference covered various topics that have the potential to improve cell factory engineering through the acceleration and enhancement of the design-build-test-learn SynBio cycles. Leaders from academia and industry introduced recent advances and future directions in biofoundries, automation, machine learning and AI, providing a fascinating glimpse into the future of biotech and SynBio. Undoubtedly, AI is poised to revolutionize and streamline experimental work, ushering in a new era of innovation. Researchers must keep up with this new era as automation becomes more and more a standard, requiring an adaptation of the researcher’s role.

The Unconference

The Unconference part where exciting topics suggested by the participants were discussed was also an interesting and innovative way to actively involve everyone. It was one of the many ways the conference exceeded expectations in increasing networking among all the participants.

We extend our gratitude to the organizing committee and Novo Nordisk Foundation Science Cluster for organizing this truly remarkable conference and providing an unforgettable experience. We look forward to the possibility of meeting again soon!
